A water pipe is being blamed for a large sinkhole that opened Tuesday at the intersection of Ste-Catherine Street and McGill College.

Police blocked traffic around the intersection while city workers placed a temporary cover over the hole.

Ste-Catherine Street is closed between Mansfield and University Street.

McGill College is closed between De Maisonneuve Boulevard and Cathcart Street.

It's not clear when the sinkhole will be repaired, or how long the streets will be closed.
