Montreal mayoral candidate Richard Bergeron will be taking a few days off the campaign trail to mourn the death of his mother.

Marcelle Bergeron died on Monday night at the age of 84.

“I know that Montrealers will forgive me this pause in the electoral debate as I withdraw, for a few days, to tend to what is more important than my political life, that is to say my family, my relatives and my friends,” Richard Bergeron said in a statement released this morning.

Projet Montréal's president Michel Camus added that all of the party's remaining 102 candidates will "carry the torch in his absence."
