Reny Gagnon, the former campaign director for Laval mayoral candidate Claire Le Bel, is charged with mischief after allegedly lying to police about being attacked.

Gagnon said he was assaulted on Oct. 7 by two men on the side of Highway 40 when he stopped because of a flat tire.

Gagnon reported the incident a day after media covered a secretly-recorded conversation between Le Bel and former mayor Gilles Vaillancourt.

Le Bel said Vaillancourt offered to help fund her bid for mayor. The mayoral candidate refused to connect the Vaillancourt tape and Gagnon’s attack at an Oct. 8 news conference, but did say she was scared and that she was under police protection.

Days later, Gagnon quit as Le Bel’s campaign director when police expressed doubts about the alleged assault.

There are no indications that Le Bel knew anything about Gagnon’s story.
