Motorists are once again being urged to avoid the Champlain and Nuns’ Island bridges this weekend due to major construction work.

Both the Champlain and Nuns’ Island bridges will have two lanes open towards Montreal, and only one lane open towards the South Shore.

The work is slated to last all weekend, starting Friday at 9 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.

“This third weekend of major work of the 2014 season will allow us to work day and night on various projects on the Nuns’ Island Bridge and the Champlain Bridge, including the progress of the operation to remove the support beam from the Champlain Bridge,” said a statement from the bridge corporation.

Throughout the weekend, the speed limit will be reduced to 50 km/h, and the available lanes on both the Champlain and Nuns’ Island spans will be reduced to three metres. Trucks that require wider lanes will have to find alternate routes.

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated says it expects traffic will be heavy on the spans and surrounding roads, and suggests drivers travelling between Montreal and the South Shore take either the Jacques-Cartier, Victoria or Honoré-Mercier bridges, or the Lafontaine tunnel.
