Jason Derrald Sivret was charged Tuesday with the city's 16th homicide of the year. He is also charged with two counts of assault.

The 67-year-old victim, Yuk Ngor Tam, was crossing the street when she was attacked and hit multiple times in the head by the suspect, according to witnesses.

Police said the incident started when the man was kicked out of a nearby bar for being too aggressive.

Witnesses intervened to stop the apparently random attack, but the woman died in hospital shortly after 4 a.m.

This is not Sivret's first run-in with police.

He was jailed for six months in 2008 after he assaulted a 60-year-old Fredericton man.

Sivret’s next court date is set for Sept. 11.
