Police are searching for a missing 47-year-old man in the Saint Lawrence River near Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, about 60 kilometres southwest of Montreal.

The man was reported missing yesterday afternoon when he did not return from an underwater spear fishing trip.

Sureté du Quebec spokeswoman, Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, said the man left his Montreal-area home on Saturday to go fishing near the Hydro Quebec dam in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, and has not been seen since.

“He was last seen Saturday morning, around 9 a.m. when he left to practice the underwater fishing, and with no news it's a member of his family that reported his disappearance yesterday around 4 p.m.,” said Bilodeau.

Bilodeau said the SQ have searched for the man in the water, along the shoreline of the river, and from above with a helicopter.

She said the man’s vehicle was found in a riverside parking lot yesterday evening, with his personal belongings sitting near the water.
