Animal welfare officials are on the lookout for a snake on the loose after it disappeared from its owner's property Sunday.

The snake, a Boa constrictor, went missing in Jonquière after a man took him out of his enclosure near the Palais des sports.

Boa constrictors are large snakes, but they are not venomous.

The missing snake is described as more than a metre long.

Carol Girard, a supervisor with the SPCA animal welfare agency, said it's best not to approach any snake if you're not familiar with it.

"It is not dangerous to humans," she said. "But certainly it can squeeze, it can choke. It tightens on its prey."

Police in the region are asking people to keep an eye out and contact the SPCA if they spot the wayward snake.
