Friends and family of Nicholas Thorne-Belance gathered today to mark the anniversary of the boy’s death.
Nicholas was just five years old when the car he was riding in was hit by an unmarked police car on Feb. 13, 2014.
Julie Virgo, the best friend of Nicholas's mother, was among those who took part in a moment of silence this morning near the spot where the boy died.
“For sure, it's for Nicholas, he's our little ray of sunshine today, and he was taken away for nothing,” Virgo said.
The unmarked police car was travelling at 122 km/h in a 50 km/h zone when it slammed into the side of father Mike Belance's sedan.
Belance was turning left on a green light at the corner of Gaétan-Boucher and Davis boulevards in Longueuil, just outside Montreal.
It was later revealed that the SQ officer was involved in a tailing operation relating to an anti-corruption investigation.
A candlelight vigil is also planned for 6:15 p.m this evening.
