The cross that sits atop Montreal’s Mount Royal will remain white, even if this is Pope Benedict XVI’s last day at the Vatican.

Normally the 103-foot-tall cross’s computer-controlled LED lights turn purple when the sitting pope dies and remains as such until a new one is elected.

The last time that happened was in 2005, when Pope John Paul II passed away.

But because Pope Benedict XVI resigned — making him the first pope in nearly 600 years to do so — the City of Montreal said the cross will remain white.
