The Sûreté du Québec are investigating after a man suffered from a heart attack and died while in police custody early Sunday morning.

Montreal police intercepted the 53-year-old man while he was crossing at a red light on Sherbrooke Street in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood.

The man was intoxicated and refused to comply with police. He went into cardiac arrest when officers tried to put handcuffs on him.

Police performed first aid before the man was transferred to hospital, where he was declared dead.
