Man stabbed to death in Côte-des-Neiges alley

A 40-year-old man is dead after being stabbed in a Côte-des-Neiges alley, and his family says the suspect arrested by police is a neighbour and acquaintance.

A 40-year-old man, Jeyarasan Manikarajah, is dead after being stabbed in the upper chest in a Côte-des-Neiges alley, just metres from his home.

The attack happened around 9 p.m. ET Monday near the intersection of Paré Street and Mountain Sights Avenue, just east of the Décarie Expressway.

It was witnessed by several people, including Manikarajah's wife and 18-year-old daughter, Thivya.

The young woman said her father was walking in front of their home when one of their neighbours approached him.

"He took him by his shoulder, and then my mom saw that from the balcony, and she thought there was something wrong," Thivya Manikarajah told CBC News. "The way he was taking him wasn't very good."

She said her mother left the apartment to see what was going on, and when she got to the alley she found her husband lying in a pool of blood.

Suspect an acquaintance

Urgences-Santé and then police were called to the scene, where the man was found with stab wounds to his upper body.

He was transported to hospital, where he later died. It is the 13th homicide of the year on the island of Montreal.

Within minutes of their arrival on the scene, police arrested a 34-year-old man in a nearby apartment.

ThivyaManikarajah said the suspect is an acquaintance of the family.

"It's not clear why he did that," she said. "We don't know yet."

Police said they were interviewing the suspect on Tuesday, and charges could be laid in the coming days.
