Provincial police are investigating the death of a man who fell from a ninth story balcony in Côte-des-Neiges last night.

They say the man, who is in his late 30s, fell to his death from a building near the corner of Côte-des-Neiges Road and Ridgewood Avenue.

The Sûreté du Québec say Montreal police were initially called to the scene when the man barricaded himself in an apartment.

A few minutes later while police were trying to communicate with the man, he fell from the balcony.

The man was taken to hospital but emergency personnel were unable to save him and he died about an hour later.

SQ Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau says provincial police are still trying to determine why the man fell.

"All we know for the moment is that he fell, but was it accidental? Was it on purpose? That’s what we’re actually trying to find out at the moment," she said.

Bilodeau says investigators are still talking to witnesses.

She said the case was transferred to the SQ because the death occurred while Montreal police were already on the scene.
