The Lachine Hospital will remain part of the McGill University Health Centre, Quebec Health Minister Réjean Hébert announced this afternoon.

Last December, Health Minister Réjean Hébert said he was considering transferring the hospital's control from the McGill University Health Centre to the local health and social services network (CSSS).

The hospital has been run by the MUHC since 2008.

Before that, it was managed by the local CSSS in Dorval-Lachine-LaSalle, during which the hospital's ambulance service was cancelled.

"We do not want to go back to LaSalle. The experience has been horrible. They basically tried to turn us into a clinic," said Dr. Paul Saba, the president of the Council of Physicians at the Lachine Hospital.

Lachine mayor Claude Dauphin spoke out in January against the hospital's potential transfer, calling the news "a nightmare" and a "huge step backward."

More than 12,000 people signed a petition against the transfer.
