A fisherman managed to escape from his sinking pickup truck after it broke through thin ice on the St. Lawrence River near Bécancour, Que., Saturday morning.

Bécancour is located across the St. Lawrence River from Trois-Rivières, Que.

The truck's cab did not go underwater, which allowed the driver to escape.

He told Radio-Canada that it was still dark out when he drove onto the ice, which prevented him from properly assessing the thickness of the ice.

The truck broke through just a few metres from the shore.

Towing company employees were at the scene trying to recover the truck.
