Hydro Québec is introducing a tech-savvy service to help the province cut down on its power consumption.

During the winter months, cold snaps put a burden on the province’s power utility, forcing Hydro Québec to purchase electricity from neighbouring markets.

In order to avoid those extra costs, the power utility is asking Quebecers to help out.

Winter peak hours:

  • Weekday mornings between 6 and 9 a.m.
  • Evenings between 4 and  p.m.

Residents can sign up to receive a text message every time there is an exceptional demand on the power grid.

“It’s going to be a reminder, to let you know… that there is a cold snap coming up and that we are asking our clients to reduce electricity,” said Louis-Olivier Batty, spokesman for Hydro Québec.

He said reducing power consumption during those peak periods benefits everyone.

“If we do reduce the electricity demand at these peak hours, this is maybe an additional cost that we will reduce … So everyone wins in this situation,” Batty said.

Batty said clients can also help by cutting down on their electricity use during regular peak hours.
