An 18-year-old man is in police custody after an undetermined number of homemade explosive devices were found in a triplex on Saturday on Robertine Barry Street in Ahuntsic-Cartierville.
The vast security perimeter around the triplex was lifted early Sunday morning after a long police operation that began nearly 24 hours earlier.
According to Const. Simon Delorme, the police and a bomb-defusing robot spent 15 hours neutralizing the different devices and bringing them outside. Some of the devices were detonated by specialists, generating noise that could be heard throughout the night.
Fifty homes were evacuated for part of the operation, and families had to spend the night away from their homes while police investigated the scene. Some were taken in by the Red Cross, while others spent the night with family and friends.
Police began sending residents back home Sunday morning.
Delorme said the suspect, who was arrested Saturday morning at a separate downtown location, allegedly acted alone and may have some form of mental health issue. He lived in the triplex with his family.
The suspect will appear in court on Monday, although it is not clear if the man will face charges, or what those charges will be.
