Sections of the westbound side of Highway 20 on Montreal's West Island were shut to afternoon rush-hour traffic Tuesday because of a major accident.

A flatbed truck hauling a large piece of metal equipment lost its load. The equipment is estimated to weigh at least 30 tonnes.

The fallen load is blocking Highway 20 between Sources and St-Jean Boulevards.

Transport Quebec is urging commuters to exit at Sources Boulevard or Highway 13, and take Highway 40 as an alternate route to the West Island.

The truck had set out from St. John's, N.L.
