Highway 20 is now open in both directions after a fatal crash prompted a road closure this morning.

A 49-year-old man was killed when the garbage truck he was driving crashed on Highway 20 near Boulevard de Mortagne in Boucherville, on Montreal's south shore.

The incident took place around 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday near the Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine tunnel.

According to authorities, the vehicle struck the median and flipped on its side. It then slid across to the cement median near the eastbound lane where it hit a metal structure holding road signs. The truck's cabin then caught fire.

Police said they had to keep the highway closed because the road sign structure was unstable and because police were investigating the scene.

Police spokesman Daniel Thibaudeau said speed and slippery road conditions may have been factors in the crash.

Highway 20 was reopened to traffic in both directions by 4 p.m.
