Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur made an emotional plea in court Thursday to defend his son Mark, who faces a barrage of assault charges involving a minor.

Mark Lafleur, 22, faces 22 charges including sexual assault involving a minor, armed assault, uttering threats and forcible confinement, all related to an alleged incident in 2005.

Lafleur was in court Thursday for his bail hearing, where his father spoke for nearly an hour, his voice sometimes trembling as he recounted his son's childhood.

The bail hearing was postponed until next week for reasons that cannot be reported under a publication ban ordered on all witness testimony.

Mark Lafleur's lawyer has said his client has Tourette's syndrome and has problems with substance abuse. Lafleur is being held at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Sherbrooke, where he has undergone psychiatric tests.
