An autopsy will be performed on the body of man found frozen in the ice of the St. Lawrence River on Sunday.

Const. Simon Delorme said a passerby spotted the body near the riverbank not far from the de la Concorde bridge near Old Montreal and contacted police.

The fire department had to be called in to help extricate the frozen corpse from the ice which appears to have been there for some time said Delorme.

"We're not experts but it wasn't done yesterday," he said.

"We're going to need an autopsy to establish the age and maybe it's going to help us to know the cause of the death,"  said Delorme.
