Thanks to the eight volunteers who came out with the CBC Montreal Do Crew for the first time yesterday!
I was so happy to have you all along for this special Mother's Day event and I hope you realize how much your presence was appreciated by the West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped (WIAIH).
I feel as though it was a privilege to be a part of such a unique partnership. The students from West Island College and the members of WIAIH came together to create a show that was quite honestly bursting with energy and pure joy.
It was remarkable to see so many smiling people working together and it was really nice to see the community that came out to support the 2014 Fashion and Variety show.
The Do Crew volunteers contributed by helping with everything from decorating to managing the clothing, the canteen and the clean-up following the afternoon performance.
It was a pleasure to meet Maria,Kristelle and her mom Elizabeth, Mary and her two daughters Emilie and Mylene,as well as Kirsten and her husband David. Thanks to you all for your energy and your enthusiasm.
In its own words, "WIAIH is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization that works to increase opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism, strengthen their families and sensitize the community."
"Created in 1958 by concerned parents, WIAIH takes a leadership role in advocacy and provides programs designed to increase independence and empower over 800 people who depend on WIAIH annually."
The annual fashion and variety show is largely organized by students from West Island College. Some of them got involved a few years ago when they were required, by their school, to do some volunteer work in the community. Many of those students became very attached to the kids of WIAIH and have remained involved with the show planning even though they have completed their community service.
The success of this event is defined by the work and cooperation of volunteers, WIC students, WIAIH family and anyone who comes out to support it.
That's where the Do Crew comes in. WIAIH needs some volunteer help.
