A two-alarm fire that gutted a two-storey residence in LaSalle left two families homeless but luckily no one was injured.

Firefighters got the call around 7 p.m. to 260 2e Avenue, between Broadway and Centrale Streets.

"There was a lot of damage to the ground floor and the second floor," said operations chief Luc Robillard. He said the damage is estimated at $50,000.

It took 20 vehicles and 70 firefighters to tame the blaze. Only one other building had to be evacuated, but it was not damaged.

Power was cut off to the area as a precautionary measure, but by 8:30 p.m., it had been restored.
