Transports Québec is warning drivers in the Montreal area to avoid the Ville-Marie Expressway in the westbound direction.

The right lane of the 720 westbound ramp that leads to westbound Highway 20 was closed during the afternoon rush hour Wednesday — and as of 10 p.m. the entire ramp will be completely shut down.

“The closure is necessary in order to carry out repair work following the deterioration of a concrete slab, which happened on Aug. 19 at the end of the day,” the ministry said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon.

The closure of the right-hand lane near the Turcot Interchange during Wednesday’s rush hour caused serious congestion on the 720 westbound that backed up all the way into the Ville-Marie tunnel.

Once the ramp is completely closed at 10 p.m., the repairs are scheduled to go on overnight.

The ramp is expected to reopen Thursday at 6 a.m.
