The CBC Montreal Do Crew chooses one non-profit organization every month and gives it a hand with an upcoming activity.
This time around volunteers will be helping out with the annual fun run event hosted by the West Island Crusade Against Cancer (WICAC).
WICAC was founded by West Islander Jim Morrison in 1997. That's the year both his father and his uncle were diagnosed with terminal cancer.
He says he wanted their lives to have meaning and that is why he decided to do something to help others dealing with cancer.
His father had introduced him to the game of squash as a child and that memory served as the inspiration for his first fundraiser — a squash marathon.
He says that event raised $1,200.00
Since then he has worked with friends and volunteers to put on events from squash tournaments to evening galas. The money raised by WICAC is turned over to NOVA West Island, the West Island Palliative Care Residence, and the Canadian Cancer Society.
The next event is the annual fun run fundraiser in Baie D'Urfe. That's where Do Crew volunteers will be lining the route to help navigate runners and cheer them on.
