A 29-year-old cyclist suffered serious head injuries early this morning after being struck by a rental van early Sunday morning at the intersection of Maguire St.and Henri-Julien Ave. in Montreal's Mile End.

Montreal police spokesman Simon Delorme said that at about 1:30 a.m., the cyclist passed to the left of a car stopped at the stop sign — and rode straight into the path of the oncoming van.

She was hit by the van and thrown under the waiting car.

The incident is still under investigation, but Delorme said it appears the cyclist was not wearing any high-visibility clothing or other protection.

“The first information we have that we found on the scene tells us that she wasn’t wearing her helmet, and also the bicycle does have any lights to identify her,” said Delorme.

Delorme said police investigators found the cyclist's helmet still locked to her bike.

Delorme issued a reminder to cyclists to follow the rules of the road, adding it’s illegal to ride without lights or reflectors.
