The Broccolini construction company says it is going back to the drawing board to rethink plans for a sprawling condominium development in Kirkland, on Montreal's West Island.
Kirkland's council voted Monday night to withdraw amendments to bylaws that would have allowed for a high-density residential project on the site of the old Merck pharmaceutical plant to go forward.

Broccolini's senior vice-president of real estate development, Roger Plamondon, said he is disappointed.
"We had a great project," Plamonodon said.
Kirkland residents had rallied to force a referendum on the proposal and had launched a petition in December opposing the project.
The Quartier Evolution project would have put 800 condominiums and townhouses in the Lacey Green area of Kirkland.
From residential to industrial
The company now has to figure out what it will do with the old Merck building.
It's considering using the land for industry instead.
"We'll bring companies in. We'll lease up that part of it, because obviously we did not buy the property to watch it remain vacant," said Plamondon.
A Kirkland councillor, Luciano Piciacchia, wasn't thrilled about the possibility.
"That whole area can be developed as an industrial complex with the traffic issues probably being equivalent if not worse," said Pichiacchia.
There is the possibility of designing another residential project for the site, but it depends on which offers come in first, said Plamondon.
