People who take commuter trains in the Montreal area could soon face additional costs.
The Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) wants to start charging for parking at commuter train stations — which would mean that some people who park and ride could be paying upwards of $300 monthly to take the train.
Right now, the most expensive monthly pass is $239 for people who use a combination of the train, metro and bus between St-Jérôme and Montreal.
AMT president Nicolas Girard said Montreal is one of the few metropolitan regions in North America that doesn’t charge for parking at train stations.
He said the AMT will look at examples in cities like Toronto, where drivers can reserve a spot for $80 a month and Chicago where parking costs between $2 and $12 a day.
Girard said the AMT would take the time to test different models in the coming year before coming up with a definitive policy in 2015.
