One man is dead and four other people are in hospital after a head-on collision on Highway 40 East in Montreal's east end.

Police say a 39-year-old man was driving his car in the wrong direction near Tricentenaire Boulevard when he hit another car.

The 39-year-old man was killed. Two of the four people in the other vehicle have serious injuries.

"We don't know yet what happened, so we have an investigator on the scene to determine what happened and the circumstance of the collision," said Christine Coulombe, a spokewoman for the Sûreté du Québec.

Two people in a third car were also taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

The highway was closed until about 8:10 a.m.  

The Sûreté du Québec increased its presence on the roads over the holiday weekend to and are urging drivers to take extra precaution while driving.
