Ottawa mayor Jim Watson has a new job.
On August 14, he will become president of the Canadian Tourism Commission.
Industry Minister John Manley confirmed the long-rumoured announcement Thursday afternoon.
Watson announced months ago that he would not seek the job of mayor of the new city of Ottawa. But he'd expressed a desire to be the last mayor of the old city of Ottawa.
That will no longer be the case.
Watson says he's excited about his new job but admits to sadness at leaving municipal politics.
"It's been a wonderful opportunity to meet so many interesting people, not just the big shots, but ordinary people who make this city work," he says.
Watson says he will also resign as honourary chair of Gloucester Mayor Claudette Cain's campaign for mayor of the new city.
