Winnipeggers targeted in phone scam

Winnipeggers are being warned about a telephone scam making the rounds.

People are phoned by someone who claims that person has won a large sum of money, about $2.5 million, as well as a luxury vehicle like a Mercedes-Benz.

The caller uses the names of legitimate organizations with which he is supposedly associated, then tells the person to send anywhere from $200 to $400 to claim the prize.

The police service's commercial crime unit has received about 12 complaints about the scam during the past two weeks.

People are urged to not wire any money to people claiming a payment is needed to win a prize. Nor should anyone provide credit card numbers or any other financial information over the phone.

Anyone who gets that type of call should hang up immediately and notify the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

If someone has legitimately won a prize, there should be no cost to the winner, police said.
