Thousands of Winnipeggers joined Christians around the world in marking Good Friday on March 29.
A public Way of the Cross was hosted at 9:30 a.m. by the Archdiocese of Winnipeg.
More than 1,000 people helped hoist a large wooden cross and carried it more than two kilometers through the city’s North End.
The procession began at the St. John Cantius Parish on Burrows Avenue, and the group paused periodically for song and prayer.
To Christians, the cross represents one Jesus died on, freeing people of their sins.
Leanne Jones, who joined in the procession, said the event is a nice alternative to a formal service.
"[It’s] kind of a modern day way of, you know, proclaiming our faith and to show our kids too," said Jones.
The event is held annually and is in its 26th year.
