Winnipeg police have announced a citizen online reporting system for minor crimes.

Members of the public will be able to file certain crimes through a website that  "provides a convenient, non-intimidating alternative" to reporting in person.

"There are immediate benefits as citizens can avoid unnecessary travel and wait times and can file a report at any time using an internet connection at home, at the office, or through a personal electronic device," states a news release from the Winnipeg Police Service.

The system offers easy instructions for reporting the crime and guides the person through a series of steps.

Only non-violent incidents involving no suspects are reportable. Currently, the following occurrence categories are eligible for online reporting:

  • Damage to property
  • Damage to vehicle
  • Theft
  • Lost property

The online reports are reviewed by police officers and entered in the records management system.

The reports receive the same investigation and statistical analysis ability as if the report were entered traditionally, according to the news release.
