Winnipeg WWE wrestler Chris Jericho suspended after flag incident
Winnipeg native Chris Jericho has been suspended by the WWE after he crumpled and kicked a Brazilian flag at the WWE's debut show in Brazil.
"Chris Jericho has been suspended for 30 days due to the irresponsible act of denigrating the Brazilian flag at WWE live event in Sao Paulo on May 24," the wrestling organization said on its website Friday.
"I made a bad judgment call in the course of entertaining fans in Brazil," Jericho said in a statement posted on the WWE site.
A video posted on YouTube shows Jericho picking up a flag that had found its way into the ring. He picks it up, crumples it in his fists, then slams it down on the ring, where he steps on it and kicks it.
"It was a bad move," Jericho said. "I did it with [our] fans’ entertainment in mind and I’ll accept the consequences for that."
According to the WWE, police stopped the bout and then gave Jericho the opportunity to apologize to those in attendance or face incarceration.
