There is reason for a sunny outlook on the new year.

"Highs [are] several degrees above the seasonal normal and lots of sunshine," said CBC meteorologist John Sauder.

"No big winds either, at least here in the Winnipeg area."

On Friday, skies are partly cloudy in the morning and are expected to clear to make for a sunny afternoon.

The high is expected to reach –7 C as northwest winds gust to 20 km/h, according to Sauder.

By night, the low is expected to drop to –11 C.

For the first weekend of 2016, highs are expected to linger around –5 C.
