Winnipeg Transit fares increased by a nickel when the calendar flipped to 2012, but some riders can still get a ride without paying a single cent.

The City of Winnipeg's transit service has a policy that allows drivers to waive bus fare for a range of reasons. It can be for someone stranded in the cold, or for someone who just can't — or won't — pay.

Jim Girden, head of the transit union, supports the city's policy.

"I'm not going to get punched in the face for $2.40 if sombody gets on the bus and they're either inebriated or under the influence or just miserable for the day, you know what I mean?"
