The City of Winnipeg will be conducting controlled burns at various areas for the next several weeks.
The burns will take place at a number of tall grass prairie and natural restoration areas until July 4.
"Fire is important to the preservation and restoration of our prairies. A lack of fire allows weeds to encroach on endangered plant communities, which is why the city conducts these controlled burns," states a release from the city.
"These controlled burns will be conducted with appropriate fire guards in place under minimal wind conditions."
Controlled burns have been safely conducted by the Naturalist Services Branch on Winnipeg’s tall grass prairies since 1986.
