Winnipeg's Redwood Bridge has been renamed to honour former Coun. Harry Lazarenko's decades of commitment to the city's North End and riverbanks.
Mayor Sam Katz officially unveiled the new name on Friday morning, in a celebration at the foot of the iron bridge that connects the North End to the Elmwood area.
Lazarenko represented the Mynarski ward on council from 1974 to 1977 and from 1983 to 2010. He retired after suffering an aneurysm.
“Not many elected officials have served or will serve the people for 30 years. He served in four decades: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s,” said current Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie, whose motion to change the name was unanimously approved by council in June 4.
A plaque detailing the bridge’s 106-year history along with the accomplishments of former Councillor Lazarenko will be installed at a future date.
