It will cost golfers in Winnipeg a toonie more to tee off at city-run courses starting next weekend, as officials are raising green fees by $2.
The City of Winnipeg said the fee increase is needed to improve its golf courses, including Crescent Drive, Harbour View, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park.
The green fees will go up starting July 20.
Officials estimate they can raise an extra $81,000 by the end of this summer to make repairs and upgrades to maintenance equipment, clubhouses, drainage and irrigation.
About $160,000 will be raised in future years, they said Thursday.
"The $2 per round increase allows Winnipeg Golf Services to be competitive in the current golf market with some of the lowest rates in Winnipeg," the city said in a release.
The city says it will honour any game passes sold and tournaments reserved before July 20 at the lower rate.
Earlier this year, city bureaucrats recommended that the four golf courses be leased out to GolfNorth Properties Inc., a private company based in Ontario.
But the plan was met with opposition, and council voted against it in May.
