Winnipeg police handed out 245 tickets to motorists, mainly for speeding, over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Both the Winnipeg Police Service and the RCMP took part in Operation Impact, a nationwide traffic blitz that had officers stepping up traffic enforcement over the holiday weekend.

Winnipeg police announced on Thursday that between Friday and Monday, tickets and charges were issued for the following:

  • Speeding — 212 offences.
  • Using handheld electronic devices while driving — 15 charges.
  • Not wearing seatbelts — 11 charges.
  • Impaired driving — seven charges.

As well, five drivers got 24-hour driving suspensions after they blew a warning on a roadside screening device, according to police.
