A Winnipeg man faces numerous charges after a teenage girl was seriously sexually assaulted last week.

According to police, the 14-year-old girl was approached by an unknown man while walking near Talbot Avenue and Watt Street on June 3.

The teen had a brief conversation with the man, who identified himself only by his first name, and together they went to his home in the 300 block of Harbison Avenue, according to police.

Once inside the home, the man "committed two serious sexual assaults upon the victim," police stated in a news release.

The teen ran away from the home and notified a parent who in turn called police.

Officers with the Winnipeg Police Service's sex crimes unit investigated the incident and arrested a 28-year-old man on June 4. He remains in custody.

Const. Eric Hofley said it's important for parents to speak to their children about going anywhere with people they don't know.

"At 14 years of age, we all know our decision-making is not the best at times, or all the time," he told reporters on Wednesday.

"We need to have those discussions with our children to ensure that this type of thing doesn't happen."

Hofley said anyone who knows of any similar situations should call police.
