Some 2,000 people from Winnipeg's Muslim community celebrated Eid Al-Adha with a prayer Friday morning at the Convention Centre.

On Eid Al-Adha, the second significant holiday on the Muslim calendar, Muslims sacrifice a cow or goat and divide the meat in thirds.

They keep one third of the meat, give another third to their friends or relatives, and distribute another third to the poor.

Last year 120 kilograms of meat and 200 loaves of bread were flown to the First Nation community of Shamattawa, 1,200 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.

Organizers are hoping to send even more this year to Manitoba First Nations communities.
