A Winnipeg fitness trainer has been named CanFitPro's fitness professional of the year.

Sandi Knox, co-owner of Body Balance Fitness and Massage on Henderson Highway, began her life as a fitness trainer when she decided not to let a mugging deter her.

Knox won the award after being narrowed down to one of three finalists. She is the first Winnipegger to garner the honour.

Knox teaches a Defence Divas class, which is offered free of charge to women who have experienced abuse.
