Dog owners who don't have their dogs microchipped can get the procedure for cheap this weekend.
The Winnipeg Network of Dog Owner Groups (WINDOG) is holding a BBQ and membership drive at Little Mountain Park Saturday afternoon.
Alpine Animal Hospital will do the injectable procedure for $20 per dog.
Donna Henry, President of WINDOG, said having them microchipped is the best thing you can do for your dog.
“This is something that all dog owners know is really important and a lot of people can't afford it,” said Henry.
In the event that dogs get loose and runaway, those with a chip are easily traceable.
"Dogs that are wearing the microchips have a much greater chance of finding their way home safely if they are ever lost or stolen," Henry said. "If they don't have microchips, recent studies have shown only slightly over 20 per cent of unmicrochipped dogs ever find their way home again."
