Winnipeg firefighters extinguished a small fire in a downtown apartment suite on Wednesday evening.

Fire crews were called at 7:10 p.m. CT to a general alarm at the Holiday Towers at Hargrave Street and York Avenue.

Water was seen pouring out of a 16th-floor balcony, spilling onto balconies below it and raining down onto the street.

Tenants told CBC News that they were told there was a small fire in a 16th-floor suite.

A platoon chief on the scene confirmed that there was a small fire, and it is under investigation.

Much of the building was evacuated, but fire officials said most tenants should be allowed back into their suites later that evening.
