A corrections officer in Winnipeg faces an assault charge after an inmate was allegedly beaten this past summer.

The arrest came after Winnipeg police and Manitoba Corrections received a complaint earlier this month about an incident involving a female correctional officer on Aug. 30.

The complaint alleges that the officer was involved in a verbal dispute with an inmate at Winnipeg's Remand Centre.

Const. Jason Michalyshen said the female officer is alleged to have struck the inmate multiple times in the upper body as a result of the argument.

On Friday, a 30-year-old woman turned herself in to Winnipeg police. She was later released on a promise to appear in court.

The woman faces one count of assault, according to police.

Michalyshen would not identify the accused, as charges had not yet been formally laid.
