A large watermain break closed a large stretch of road in Winnipeg Thursday afternoon.

The break, at Marion Street and Lagimodiere Boulevard, happened just before 1 p.m., leaving Marion flooded.

Scott Martin was driving on Marion right after the break happened.

He said the water initially didn’t look that deep, but water soon started flowing into his vehicle, leaving him stranded.

“The police car had left and gone further down the block then I really didn’t understand why he was doing that, but then we saw the water and by the time we’re in it, we’re in it. It’s already too late,” he said.

He described the incident to CBC over the phone while he sat stuck in his vehicle.

“It’s coming inside the truck, inside the bottom of the door, so the floor, where you put your feet on the floor, it’s probably got an inch and a half in it,” he said. “You’ve got to keep your feet off the floor. It’s nice to have that little hump in the centre.”

Police redirected traffic on Marion onto Dawson Road for over an hour, and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

City officials said the winter conditions were making the leak more difficult to control and find because the water wasn't draining into catch basins, which were frozen.
