Winnipeg city council has approved the Parker Lands route for the second phase of its rapid transit corridor.
Council voted 11-5 on the issue just after noon on Wednesday.
The Winnipeg Humane Society, some environmentalists and residents from the neighbourhood, opposed the route. They claim it will impact nearby wetlands and a popular dog park.
The controversial $350-million corridor will run alongside Pembina Highway from Jubilee Avenue, then detour off Pembina through the Parker lands and then return to Pembina and on to the University of Manitoba.
The city’s executive policy committee approved plan earlier this month, after another city committee also gave it an OK.
