Southern Manitoba is surfacing from Monday's snowstorm but still facing frigid temperatures and hazardous road conditions.
Crews continue to plow and sand the roads and highways but many remain partly covered with drifting snow. Icy patches are also contributing to the dangerous conditions.
Several school divisions have cancelled classes or bus transportation for today.
The storm that blasted the province prompted the closure of a handful of highways for several hours and put pretty much all of southern Manitoba under blizzard, heavy snowfall or blowing snow warnings.
All of the weather warnings were lifted by around 7 p.m.
What hasn't lifted is the cold air hanging over the province. In Winnipeg on Monday morning, the temperature was –25 C with a windchill that made it feel more like – 36.
Normal temperatures for this time of year are a high of 1C and a low of –10 C.
The forecast for the week, however, is hopeful.
The daytime highs are expected to go from –11 C on Tuesday and Wednesday to –2 C by Saturday before breaking the freezing mark and heading into plus-temperature territory for the following week.
Even so, it's a far cry from one year ago, when Winnipeg set a heat record for March 19, hitting 23.7 C.
