The Winnipeg Humane Society came out in harsh opposition to animals being used in circuses ahead of the arrival of the Super Spring Break Circus in the city.
Officials announced their opposition to animals being used in circuses on Tuesday, saying exotic animals should not be used for entertainment.
Humane Society CEO Bill McDonald said the city is in the process of banning such events and his organization was caught off-guard when they heard the event was planned.
"This one was a bit of a surprise coming to us because the new animal services bylaws include a clause that the chief operating officer does not have the authority to issue a special permit to authorize a travelling zoo, travelling exhibit, or a circus,” said McDonald.
Officials from the animal-welfare organization said animals used in circuses endure difficult lives with small living spaces, harsh training and very little opportunity to socialize with other animals.
The Super Spring Break Circus boasts an “array of exotic” animals.
Organization officials criticized the MTS Centre for hosting the circus, saying in a release the venue should “know better than to present entertainment that is well-known to be cruel.”
The Winnipeg Humane Society said the show is especially concerning because its target audience is children. Officials said the circus teaches children it is acceptable to demean animals for entertainment.
The Super Spring Break Circus is scheduled for March 26 and 27 at the MTS Centre.
