Brandon University's new chancellor is Michael Decter, a financier, senior public-sector manager and expert on health systems.
The university's senate ratified Decter's appointment this week, and he will be officially installed as chancellor during convocation on May 31.
He succeeds longtime journalist Henry Champ, who died in September during his second term as chancellor.
"Michael brings incredible depth to BU, through both his career experiences and vast network," university president Deborah Poff said in a news release Tuesday.
"We welcome Michael and anticipate that his leadership will help us grow as an institution during his term as chancellor."
A native Manitoban who currently lives in Ontario, Decter is a former deputy health minister in Ontario and a former cabinet secretary with the Manitoba government, the university said in a release.
Decter is the founding chair of the Health Council of Canada, and he continues to serve with numerous non-profit health-care organizations, according to the university.
He is presently the president, CEO and senior portfolio manager of LDIC Inc., a Toronto-based investment company, and is the author of eight books, including three financial books.
